I RUN THE MARATHON TO THE VERY LAST MILE
Another successful Marathon under the fuel belt. My dad came from PEI again this year for the Mississauga Marathon, just a couple of weeks after tackling heart break hill in the Boston Marathon. T-Rex and I drove through torrential downpours and hail to pick him up at the airport and make our way to the expo! The expo was a lot of fun and we got tons of goodies for our goody bags. T-shirts were a little disappointing, over sized and boring, but whatever. Triton picked up Vicki's race kit and my dad and I grabbed our own and we ventured back to TO to rest and carbo load for the night.
4am: Rise and Shine! Eat my regular breakfast and gather up my gear. 5am Vicki calls to cancel - our trio now down to two :( But not for long, Triton, with a few hours sleep and no marathon training steps up! Woohoo.
Last year I really wanted to break 3:40 for my run and with such a fast first half I was convinced I would make it. The last 10k however surprised me with tired legs, a head wind and unexpected hills. I crossed the finish line in 3:46 - devastated, hurting and unhappy. This year I knew I wasn't as well trained (i've been fighting a foot injury all year), so I really wanted to run it injury free and with a smile on my face. I did just that. I ran at a comfortable pace although I could feel the leg pain early on in the race. The 3:40 pace bunny passed me around km 18, I wished them luck and said I'd see them at the finish line. I made it to the finish line (with a playful finish line sprint against another girl) in 3:52. Looking back I think, if only I had ran just a little faster, or trained a little harder I could have...but you know I made some new friends along the course and achieved my race goal of finishing with a smile.
My dad on the other hand took a much more competitive approach to this race and ran a new PB with a blistering age grouper pace of 3:25 qualifying him for Boston once again.
Triton sent a new PB (being his first half) and ran an impressive 1:57. He says he wants to stick to 5ks from now on...I seen marathon in the future. haha.
So overall a great day for running!
Next up: Milton Tri May 31st
