I WANT A PERFECT BODY...I WANT A PERFECT SOUL
I read this exert today on the webpage of a popular running magazine..
What's Your Ideal Weight?
The secret to knocking minutes off your race times could be as simple as losing just a few pounds. That’s right – recent studies linking reduced Body Mass Index (BMI) with increased aerobic capacity suggest runners can expect their marathon times to improve by more than 15 minutes, simply by shedding excess weight.
While no doubt this is true to some extent, I'm more concerned with what message this is sending to women who are already at risk of Female Athlete Triad, FAT.
if you are a physically active woman, you are at risk for the Triad. The competitive nature and strong discipline that can help make you a good athlete may also be part of the equation leading to this disorder. Competitive athletes may be at a higher risk than the more casual athlete due to a more rigorous training schedule and the "play-to-win" nature of their sports. You are particularly at risk if you participate in endurance sports, like cross-country running; aesthetic sports, like gymnastics or ballet; and sports which require formfitting uniforms, like swimming. The emphasis on a certain "look" and the perception that carrying less weight will universally improve performance lead to this risk.

I think that the important lesson here is that if you're trying to fine tune your diet to really maximize your athletic potential, you should consult with a registered dietician who specialize in this area. I'm assuming they could provide you with a calorie intake number, as well as which vitamins/etc. you should be taking supplements for. I'm not sure what the cost of such a consultation would be, but I'm betting you can find someone who knows someone else at work, eh? Worth a shot, says I.
