111th BOSTON MARATHON

The Boston Marathon began in 1897 when John J McDermott emerged from a 15 member starting field to complete the 24.5 mile race in a time of 2:55:10. The Boston Marathon (now 26.2 miles) has since become the world's oldest annually contested marathon, held the 3rd Monday of every April (Patriot's Day).
It is the 2nd Largest Single Day Sporting Event (behind the Super Bowl) bringing 1100 media members and 500 000 spectators lining the streets of Boston.
This year was my Dad's 2nd Boston Marathon and he did absolutely fannnnntastic! 4:03:02 despite the high winds (up to 50 miles/hour head wind for most of the course!) and suffering plantar fasciitis/knee problems before hand. I haven't got the play by play details of the race from him yet, but I anticipate getting the full breakdown, that only another runner could truly appreciate, tonight :) Scott Clark from PEI also did absolutely amazing! Huge shout out to all 18 runners from little PEI!! OHhhhhhhhh I want to qualify like you wouldn't believeeeee! 112 could be the year for pdawg...

A new female runner took the lead this year, Russia's Lidiya Grigoryeva

And the men's division was taken again by Robert Cheruiyot who finished in a time of 2:14 (7 minutes slower than his Course Record from 2006 2:07:14), which just goes to show how difficult the running conditions were yesterday!
Robert Cheruiyot has now been added to my short list of life heroes.
“When I started to run I’d never imagined having an opportunity to compete against the best marathoners of the world, but I dedicated my life to this. I don’t remember a day in my life without running. I live to run, and—thanks to my victories in Boston and Chicago—I am the World Marathon Majors Leader of 2006, which has been my proudest running accomplishment. My Boston experiences have also been very positive. I really like this course even if it’s quite hard, but the more difficult a race is, the more I commit myself to do my best.” - Robert K Cheruiyot (Kenya)
