TO THE MAX
I signed up for to take part in a study examining the effects of prolonged exercise on heart function being done by U of T Graduate Department of Exercise Science.
Today was my first test...the VO2 Max.
I love fitness testing, but it always makes me so nervous. I'm not sure why...maybe b/c it's easy to say 'Yeahhh i'm in pretty good shape ya know, I work out and blah blah blah...' and I'm worried the fitness test will show the world that I'm not realllllly an athlete, just mysteriously I'm able to make it to the finish line when I race....
Also, when someone hooks you up to a heart rate monitor, puts a head piece snugly on your head and attaches a breathing tube, plugs your nose and puts you on a moving treadmill with increasing incline and speed and tells you to run to exhaustion - it's a lil nerve racking...
So I showed up today for my first of 3 Fit Tests of the study. I signed lots of waivers and questionnaires and got my height and wt and away I went on the treadmill.
I ran 14:00
Br/min: 52
VO2/Kg (ml/Kg): 50.4 (i.e. my VO2 Max)
Max HR: 197
Anaerobic Threshold: 185
I checked the old internet and a VO2 max > 41 for females my age is Superior :) although those blood doping Tour de Francers typically have VO2 maxes in the 90's!!
Next week --> Treadmill run at the hospital with a Cardiologist, 2.5 hour track run, Dobutamine continuous IV injection to raise my heart rate while resting and ECHO of my heart....WOOT WOOT!
